The History of the M.O.C.C.

The Mid-Ohio Corvette club formed in 2006. Richard Danby and Paul Kemerer worked with Jan Bunting and Kirk Spurgeon of Spurgeon Chevrolet (Formerly Red Ferris Chevrolet), Dealership in Wooster, OH to set up a table to survey prospective interest in starting a Corvette Club during the annual Corvette Cruise-in event at Boy’s Village (now The Village Network) in August.. Thirty-eight individuals expressed interest at the event by signing up on a roster and providing their contact information.

Following the cruise-in, Rich and Paul along with Kirk believed there was sufficient interest to move forward and determined the next step was to convene a meeting of those who has signed the roster. Kirk offered the showroom of the Spurgeon Chevrolet dealership as a location to meet – so with that, information was sent to the interested parties that a meeting would convene on September 19th to talk about organizing a club. This meeting was fundamentally an introductory/get-to-know you gathering with an objective to explore the formation of a new Corvette club. Some of the attendees were members of the Wooster based Cardinal Corvette Club that deactivated in the mid 80s.

These individuals provided some historical information about the Cardinal club, its predecessor club and National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC) – Eastern Ohio Region activities. A representative of the East Ohio Region NCCC also attended the meeting and presented information about NCCC affiliation along with additional historical information about regional Corvette clubs.

Based on the success of the first meeting, a second meeting convened October 17th with 25 people present. Attendees (we weren’t a club yet) discussed club organization, club purpose, officer volunteers and nominations, NCCC membership, a club name, a schedule for monthly meetings and other facets of creating a club.

November 14th was our third meeting (29 attendees) and we were finally looking and feeling as though we were actually developing an operating Corvette club. We spent time discussing a club name, listening to visitors from the NCCC, the Mansfield, OH, Corvette Club; Buckeye Corvette Club (Canton, OH) and the Pioneer Corvette Club talk about benefits of NCCC membership/affiliation and related club start up suggestions. We also conducted our first club elections and talked about club dues and By-laws.

December 12th was the last meeting of the year with 26 attendees. We again discussed and actually took action to incorporate the club as a legal entity in Ohio, opened a bank account, collected dues, submitted membership application forms and approved the club By-laws.

The year ended with lots of member (yes, we were now a club) enthusiasm and energy to move into 2007 as the Mid-Ohio Corvette Club – now positioned for success and eager to being club activities. We thank all those who provided us encouragement, guidance and contributions to get a good start. We especially thank Kirk and Jan at Spurgeon Chevrolet – our primary club sponsor, for their hospitality and contributions.
