The Mid-Ohio Corvette Club celebrated its 12th year of Vette excitement by way of "Cruisin' for the Kids" on Saturday, Aug. 14. They were delighted to join the Christian Children's Home of Ohio (CCHO) with a goal of providing the staff and children with a fun day of food and camaraderie.

There were 118 Corvette owners who began their day with a Continental breakfast held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. A cruise then followed to CCHO where a luncheon, featuring Shreve chicken with all the "fixin's", was served and Corvette rides given to the children. People purchased tickets for the nearly 100 baskets that raises money each year for the event.

"It was a perfect summer day to welcome the Mid-Ohio Corvette Club (MOCC) for the 12th annual Cruisin' for the Kids event," said Dan Franks, director of Development at CCHO.

"Delicious food, great people and thrilling rides! Thank you, MOCC, for your continued heart for hurting kids," Franks said.

The 13th annual “Cruisin for the Kids” event is planned for Aug. 13, 2022.

2019 Mid-Ohio Corvette Club's 10th Annual Fundraiser for Christian Children's Home of Ohio (August 10, 2019)

The 10th annual "Cruisin For the Kids" event to the Christian Children’s Home of Ohio and sponsored by Mid-Ohio Corvette Club held on Aug. 10 was again a great success.

On Sept. 10 MOCC members held their monthly meeting at Christian Children’s Home of Ohio and presented a check for $8,462, which made a total of this year’s fundraiser of $20,157 given to CCHO. Kevin Hewitt, president and CEO of CCHO and Dan Franks, Director of Development, accepted this year’s contribution. In the past 10 years MOCC has given the home nearly $180,000 thanks to the support of Corvette owners, businesses, organizations and citizens.

"It was awesome to see the lawn filled with 167 Corvettes, the biggest event yet," Hewitt said. "We loved seeing our kids ride around with Corvette drivers in style. Thank you MOCC for sharing your time, talents and resources to help the kids explore their worth. Our support is making a difference in transforming future leaders."

The day-long event began with a Continental breakfast at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster. Then Corvette drivers cruised to CCHO to have lunch with the children and staff at CCHO. At CCHO there was a large basket raffle.

Chicken cooked by MOCC members and a complete meal was served up by volunteers to the kids, staff and attendees.

The kids received individualized backpacks and supplies, face painting, acted as car judges, awarded trophies and with great anticipation, engaged in being the navigator of a Corvette, driven by "race car drivers."

"Thank you again for all the Mid-Ohio Corvette Club does for Christian Children’s Home of Ohio," said Franks, Director of Development. "I wanted to be sure that you saw this comment from one of our employees, regarding our Facebook post on MOCC’s day at CCHO. "My boys from Cottage 6 absolutely adored the rides. Each and every one of them had huge smiles on their faces the whole time. It was awesome to get to see them experience something like this. Thank you for putting it on every year," said Elizabeth Ankeny, CCHO employee.

Thank you for bringing smiles to the children on campus, Franks added. This year 27 kids enjoyed their special day.

History of this event began in the early months of 2010 when MOCC members met to discuss their largest endeavor of the year. "We had always chosen our yearly fundraiser on the basis of the recipient’s overall need," said Jim Morrison, former president and current vice president of MOCC. "After learning that Christian Children’s Home of Ohio was focused on nurturing young girls and boys who may never have received warmth from a home environment otherwise, we were excited to pick CCHO."

Each year members work as a team to organize committees for everything needed to create a successful, fun and financially rewarding day for CCHO. Flyers are printed and mailed to anyone and everyone who owns a Corvette so they could mark their calendars for the yearly event, held the second Saturday in August each year. From April through early August, MOCC members canvass an area consisting of at least three counties going door-to-door to both individuals and companies asking for contributions for CCHO.

"This "Cruisin For the Kids" event has grown over the past 10 years," said Regina Muich, who coordinates events for the kids, including giving them backpacks each year. "One year the children chose as their favorite a particularly beautiful car that had won multiple trophies at other shows. The owner later told me that this was the best trophy he had ever received and that it meant more to him than any other," Muich said.

Many Corvette owners from East Ohio Region attended. This year the event was attended by Corvette owners from Florida, Georgia and Ohio.

It was the biggest number of Corvettes (167) ever to attend "Cruisin For the Kids," thanks to the efforts of Dan Gallagher, MOCC President and Terry Muich.

There is no entry fee. MOCC has donated 100 percent of the proceeds to CCHO.

Aug. 8, 2020 is next year’s "Cruisin For the Kids."
